Oral Presentation Sydney Spinal Symposium 2025

Keynote Speaker - What can we glean from paediatric pain research? (128116)

Joshua Pate 1
  1. University of Technology Sydney, Chippendale, NSW, Australia

This lecture explores the potentially underappreciated insights that paediatric pain research offers across the lifespan for understanding and managing pain, including complex spinal conditions. Moving beyond the fundamental concept that 'children are not little adults,' the presentation will illustrate how principles derived from child-centred care and distinct paediatric communication strategies can enhance adult patient-centred practice. Dr Pate will share recent findings from his research team to discuss limitations of overly simplistic approaches to pain science education. Instead, he will advocate for a strengths-based model grounded in understanding the patient's existing conceptual framework, informed by tools like the Concept of Pain Inventory (COPI), to foster meaningful conversations. The presentation aims to provide attendees with translatable clinical strategies, stimulate new perspectives on preventative health narratives, and contribute to an expanded understanding of pain's complexity.
